Indigenous Australia: Masterworks from the National Gallery of Australia

With the exhibition Indigenous Australia: Masterworks from the National Gallery of Australia the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) and me Collectors Room Berlin are setting out to provide an insight into the many qualities of traditional and modern art by Aboriginal Australians as well as the inhabitants of the many islands dotting the Torres Strait between Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Beginning with pieces from the early 19th century, the exhibition leads up to contemporary works by artists from these same communities, spanning all regions of the continent. The selection of almost 180 of the most important pieces – including works by many of Australia’s greatest Indigenous artists in the category of masterworks – aims to demonstrate the great diversity within this family of art practices as well as its more recent development. While paintings form the core of the exhibition, they are accompanied by videos, sculptures, installations, traditional jewellery, head dresses and ceremonial objects. Indigenous Australia: Masterworks from the National Gallery of Australia is a National Gallery of Australia Exhibition. The project has been assisted by the Australian Government.
