V1 Gallery in Copenhagen has gained a reputation for being an art venue with a cunning knack of reading our age. More often than not, it is first to introduce emerging talent before it becomes famous internationally. It also knows what is going on abroad. In 2003, it was the first Scandinavian gallery to exhibit ‘now notable’ street artists Banksy, Eine, Zevs, the Faile artist collective; and OBEY.
Aside from spotting and incubating emerging artists, the art space exhibits a solid roster of established artists. Altogether it creates a neat mix of contemporary art, which in turn reaches out to interact with society at large.
It is no wonder then that V1 crops up in lists of international galleries on a frequent basis. Even the somewhat US-centric complex.com mentioned V1 as 10 out of 100 best galleries in the World in 2012.
Founded in 2002 by Jesper Elg and Peter Funch, V1 Gallery is located in Vesterbro, Copenhagen. The two own the gallery and act as curators, and in 2004 Mikkel Grønnebeck joined the management team in the same capacity.
One thing is to create a reputation that makes people find you. Another is to find people where they are and enter a dialogue on their terms. V1 has been fast in realising that you need to be where the art collectors are. As a result V1 has been present at the following art fairs, and several of them many times over:
• The Armory Show,
• Art Brussels
• Art Cologne
• ART Copenhagen
• CHART
• MARKET
• Preview Berlin
• VOLTAshow
• Zoo Art Fair
