Also known as art informel, art autre literally means ‘art of another kind’ in French. The term was used to describe a trend in abstract art in the 1940s and 1950s that applied an improvisatory approach to visualisation through a gestural technique.
Michel Tapié’s 1952 book titled Un art autre, was very influential in establishing a European approach to what was simultaneously understood as abstract expressionism in the USA. Within Art Autre there are subgenres also known as action painting and lyrical abstraction.
