Dada

Launched in Zürich in 1916 as a literary group, Dada quite naturally ended up encompassing all art forms, typography and publishing. The Artistic movement of Dada soon spread to artists in other European cities and the USA, the largest of which was the German Berlin group of artists. Dada was very much a marked response to the first world war and a clear rejection of the nationalism, art forms and cultural heritage which directly or indirectly led up to the war. The dadaists used unconventional techniques and approaches to art, including chance as an important ingredient. The act of making collages was also one which was characteristic for the movement as a mode of expression.
