The term refers to an academy of art founded in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1767. The School is very much known for the works it produced in the 1830s and 1840s. At its height it infused genre landscapes with emotion in a manner first observed in the Nazarene School. The art may be classed as Beidemeier and their influences spread across Europe.
