A style of painting which is a reaction to the works of de Stijl. The term was coined by Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931) in a dislike to the vertical and horizontal lines insisted upon by Piet Mondrian (1872-1944).
Van Doesburg introduced the diagonal lines to purposely create tension, movement and dynamics in his art.
