In latin the term was synonymous with framed portrait. The art that was soon to be know as Imago clipeata depicted heroes on Roman shields.
These portraits on shields were used during Roman military memorials. Later and up to the baroque, they evolved into a type of medallion portraits that were supported by nymphs or genii. In this capacity they were then used to signify apotheosis.
