Limited edition

Mostly a term heard in the context of prints, e.g giclee printing. However the term refers to series or sets of both two- and three-dimensional works. The series or the set ties up with the word ‘edition’

As for the word ‘limited’, the limitation is the actual number produced. It indicates controlled production of a replicated image or model, and by numbering and signing the result, the artist creates collectible works of art which tends to be more affordable than the original which served as a master for these copies.

Limited editions can affect the price of the original work of art which served as a source for the limited edition. Since the limited edition may prove popular in its limited circulation amongst collectors, it may become more desirable to own the original work of art because of its implicit guarantee of exclusivity.
