liver of sulphur

A common name for potassium sulphide, which sculptors use in mixes for staining bronze and other metals. Liver of sulphur is a vaguely defined mixture of potassium sulfide, potassium polysulfide, potassium thiosulfate, and potassium bisulfide.

There are synonyms for the mix such as hepar sulfuris, sulfur, sulfurated potash and sulfurated potassa.
