The Louvain school was a group of 15th-century Flemish artists. The city of Louvain became a leading centre of humanistic culture after the foundation of a university in 1425. One of the more influential of the Louvain painters was Dirk Bouts (the Elder), whose strong realism and refined style became known as the Louvain artistic style.
