A term used by sculptors and in particular in the context of comissioned work. A Maquette is a small model in clay or vax. As such it acts as a preliminary sketch to present a client for proposed work. It may also serve much the same purpose when used to attract a scholarship or an art prize. There is another name for maquette and that is the Italian word bozzetto.
