Late 19th century French art movement. In effect it is the synthesis of impressionism and pointilism. I.e the emphasis on immediately perceived light and colour of impressionism, combined with the methodical near scientific application of dots and shapes from pointilism. Some of the artists now mentioned are also classed as either pointilists or impressionists:
Georges Seurat (1859-1891), Paul Signac (1863-1935) and Camille Pissaro (1830-1903)
