New English Art Club

As with all things which people term ‘new’ something or other, what exactly do you term what comes after? The ‘new new’ perhaps?. Anyhow, New English Art Club was a society of artists founded by English artist Walter Sicket (1860-1942). At the time, the Society was formed as a clear reaction to the very restrictive and formal way that the Royal Academy dealt with art and artists.

The group included Agustus John (1878-1961), and James MacNeill Whistler (1834-1903). Today the Art club is viewed as a precursor to the Camden Town Group.
