A 1990s movement which particularly came to the fore in The Netherlands. Toyist art focuses on narrative respresentations. It favours figurative over abstract objects and is characteristic for a bold use of colours and outlines. Most toyist artists work under aliases which are either funny or outright weird. In all the work there is a sense of both seriousness and sophisticated humour.
